Are you stressed out? We totally get it. In our crazy, busy lives, it’s easy to lose sight of good health tools and to feel unbalanced, high strung, and out of energy.
Here are our holistic health tips for deling with stress:
1. Identify the sources of stress in life:
The first step to dealing with stress is to identify what is stressing you out in your life. It is easy to overlook certain sources of stress. Try keeping a stress journal to help you in thinking about the stress in your life. Make sure to include what is causing your stress, how you felt and how you acted. Is your stress temporary or permanent? Is your stress primarily at work or home, or both? All these things will help you identify the stress in your life.
2. Look at how you currently cope with stress:
Think about how your current strategies in dealing with stress. Before you can make your stress-coping techniques better and healthier, you need to think about what you are currently doing. Are your techniques unhealthy? Unhealthy ways of dealing with stress include drinking too much, under eating or over eating, withdrawing from friends and family, sleeping too much or too little, procrastinating, lashing out at others and zoning out for hours in front of the TV or computer. Identify your techniques and evaluate whether you need to change them or not.
3. Avoid unnecessary stress:
A certain amount of stress is inevitable. However, most people also have a large amount of unnecessary stress. Take stock of your daily life: if your environment is stressing you out, change it. If your to-do list is too long, separate your “should” and “musts.” Surround yourself with people you love and avoid the toxic ones. In sum, realize your limits as a human being, and learn how to say no!
4. Alter a stressful situation or adapt to it:
If you find yourself in a stressful situation, find ways to either alter the situation or alter yourself. If you find yourself with an enormous amount of work and little time to do it, try doing things to manage your time better in the future. Don’t take the passive position in your own life; deal with your problems head on, and be willing to compromise. Furthermore, don’t sweat the small stuff. Look at the big picture and focus on the positive. All of these tips will help you deal with stressful situations and hopefully make them better in the future.
5. Accept the things you can’t control:
There are certain stressors in your life that you have no control over. The best way to deal with these kinds of stressor is to accept them. Remember that the behavior of others is completely out of our control. Look for the silver lining in stressful situations and express your frustration in a healthy way such as talking to a friend or writing in a journal. Lastly, learn to forgive. Holding on to resentment and anger will only cause more stress in your life. If you can’t control a stressful situation, let it go as much as you can and you will probably feel a lot better.
6. Make time for yourself:
Even during super stressful times, make sure you take at least a little time for yourself. Little ways of doing this, including going for a walk, calling a friend, writing in a journal, playing with a pet, watching a TV show or listening to music may give you the moment of rejuvenation that you need to continue dealing with stress. Taking care of yourself is not an option, it is a necessity.
7. Adopt a healthier lifestyle!
Even though trying to focus on your health and wellness during times and stress can seem like one more thing to do, it is incredibly important and may help build resistance to stress. Exercise regularly, because it can help reduce and prevent the effects of stress; nothing beats a good work out for releasing a bunch of pent up tension! Make sure you eat a healthy diet as well, for nourishing diets can help us stay focused and energized. Finally, get enough sleep. Lack of sleep can cause unclear thinking, which will only contribute to more stress.
Once you feel more balanced and focused, it will seem easier to put your energy into the right projects you need to feel you best. You will also be able to tackle your to-do list with a better attitude and more confidence!
