Using Social Media and Red Quinoa Salad

9

Nothing is more promising than the setting sun of Friday afternoon. The weekend countdown has begun! Anyone have something fun planned?

I’m really starting to feel at home at the Cancer Action Network. This week we focused a lot on social media and how we can use websites like facebook, twitter, 4square, etc to mobilize people to support our causes. It’s interesting seeing it from a non-profit business perspective after I use these tools for personal/blog use. I’ve begun to look at these sites with a new perspective and really getting the grasp on how companies can use these sites for profit or save the world—I like the latter.

Since everyone reading is, at least a little bit, in the know with social media and uses Facebook, Twitter, etc. what is your opinion on businesses using these sites?? Whether to sell products, mobilize non-profits volunteers, advertise, or promote an idea. I feel like the more popular these sites become, the less it is about the “individual” and the more it’s about big companies.

What do you think about the trend of using social media for businesses and corporations? Do you think it matters what their goals and tactics are? Is a nonprofit on facebook (like the EWG or ACS) more respected by you, or do you like the promotions and interactions with companies that sell things too?

I think this is only going to become more relevant as technology broadens so I’m interested in everyones’ opinions.

And while fussing around with social media at work, I fueled my busy brain with this LOVELY red quinoa salad with a lot of diverse nutrients:

I think red quinoa is so fun and I love using it instead of regular quinoa. This also has aduki beans, slivered almonds, blackberries, and massaged kale…See?
I mixed all this together with about 2 Tbs walnut oil, 1 Tbs maple syrup and some pinches of salt. It’s one of my favorite quinoa salads to date–sweet and substantial. I think the kale really makes it unique and impressive.
If you do make this, or decide to add kale to a grain, pasta, or potato salad, make sure the kale is chopped super small and massaged with olive (or another) oil. It’s much more enjoyable to eat if you’re not choking on big pieces of green!
Can you see the aduki beans among the red quinoa? Next time I might try a black or white bean for more color. Then again, I think the subtle change in color is really appealing too.
Now let’s talk social media…
Have a wonderful weekend, gang! :)

I finally tried some quinoa last night. Maybe it was the way it was made but it was bland to me. 17 mile training run Sunday sound like fun?

Sometimes I think that companies can use the social media to provide valid information to their target market. I follow some corporations and even small businesses on facebook and twitter because I choose to — because I'm interested in the new products that they put out or the news that they share.
I like having the power to choose who is advertising to me.

i personally like to just use my FB for friends and twitter is wide open. but i hate getting solicited by co's on twitter that i dont want their stuff. i follow them simply b/c they are following me and i use my twitter as a wide open, whereas FB i am more protective :)

i like your statement of "choosing who's advertising to me." that's a big part of what it is. and it's better than not knowing the companies!

lol sounds like a blast! Quinoa definitely needs to be seasoned, eating it plain is like plain pasta or something…bland.

i like twitter but the whole facebook thing has not flowed with me at all. not sure how it can benefit companies either but if it works-use it! especially to save the world ;)

I think it's totally fine that companies use social media to market their product…but so long as they do it tactfully, nothing like forcing their products down my throat to turn me off!

I had company last night and made a quinoa/black bean/carrot side dish that was yum! I need to get some more kale and remember to rub it with the oil. Often It ends up being endlessly chewed which is a bummer. Re social media: i think it depends on how the business/nonprofit uses it. Too much blather and I'm turned off. I do like the more personal connection to products and company policies. Of course, it would depend on if those policies were. It would totally work to make me NEVER buy the product if I'm at odds with the policy. My two cents.

Through blogging, I've started to realize just how useful social networking media can be. I've always bashed Twitter, but it's a great way to connect with people…I think all of these sites have changed a lot since they started, and while I sometimes wish that FB were still for college kids only, you just have to go with the times!
